What is FindLaw?
FindLaw is a legal marketing firm founded in 1995 and owned by Thomson Reuters. They have one of the largest legal directories on the web and offer website design and other legal marketing services (like SEO, content development, etc.).
What services do they provide?
FindLaw offers a fairly wide range of services, but we'll focus on the most well-known.
FindLaw Lawyer Directory
This listing has a large inbound link profile and listings inFindLaw directorytend to rank well organically. In my experience, this is the most enticing and valuable product FindLaw offers. However, proper use of their directory requires a client to do their due diligence and ensure the listing gets traffic, ranks well in organic search, and ranks near the top (to justify the investment and clicks). Asattorney directoriesgo, theirs is very competitive and among the best available.
In some regions and job areas, I've seen FindLaw perform very well: the directory page ranks well for direct job area searches and gets a decent amount of organic traffic. On other occasions, I've performed competitive analysis for a FindLaw URL that isn't ranking as well as you might expect. While it can get traffic, the likelihood of converting a visitor into a customer isn't as high.
In every single situation where I have requested information for a sponsored directory listing, I have never received the analytics before receiving the offer. It is imperative that you request analysis and conduct your own competitive analysis to evaluate the investment. This is crucial because (as we'll discuss) FindLaw makes it difficult to break contracts. So you don't want to commit long-term to something that doesn't generate ROI, but this is especially true when it also requires a restrictive agreement.
Numerically speaking, you can spend $150 per click on “car crash attorney” on Google AdWords. If you're paying $1000/month for a FindLaw car accident attorney list that gets 20 clicks per month, then a FindLaw directory seems like a more sensible investment ($50 per click). However, note the following: AdWords allows you to bid on the bidsExactlyphrases you want. With FindLaw, bid for organic position and placement (cast a wide net, if you will, rather than precision strike with AdWords).
Here is a listing that may be worthwhile depending on the price:
Why? It ranks incredibly well for direct intentPersonal Injury SEO(e.g. "personal injury attorney", "personal injury attorney", etc.) phrases. This listing could generate conversions so depending on the price this could be a worthwhile investment.
On the other hand, here is an example of a listing where the analytics can be misleading:
Why? While this listing may include historical traffic analysis, their current rankings for direct intent phrases are relatively poor (on the second page at best). This is generally risky, but depending on the price, it can be very risky.
FindLaw Directory and SEO
One thing to consider is that you are making an investment for a premium profile (the last offer I received was $299/month) with the intention of doing this to help improve the profileSEO for your website(as opposed to a lead generation source) is always an option. You can get many of the benefits of a FindLaw profile from the backlink alone as it is a DR (Domain Rating) 90 niche link and has tremendous authority.
Website design
Overall, FindLaw websites tend to be very cookie-free, a complaint that applies to their peers as welljustice. That means they have a consistent design aesthetic and they apply it broadly to their entire client base; If you see enough FindLaw websites, you'll find that they all look the same to some degree.
That said, I won't blame you if you like their designs. After all, this is a completely subjective thing. FindLaw websites are like a Prius: they are not designed for Flash and flair, but for functionality and efficiency. There's nothing wrong with that per se, but it makes it extraordinarily difficult to stand out. Just as a Prius tends to blend in with the traffic around it, a FindLaw website won't make waves when it comes to its overall "curb appeal."
Now let's move on to the legitimately bad parts of FindLaw's website design:
First of all, their websites are based on a proprietary CMS (Content Management System). This means it isimpossibleso that you can make your own changes (both as a customer and afterwards). You are essentiallyhandcuff youto their platform. In fact, one of our legal marketing peers (Konrad together) even has a "Jailbreak Guide” for escaping FindLaw.
Second, value judgments about aesthetics aside, the FindLaw sites I've seen/analyzed consistently lacked proper SEO optimizations.
Marketing Services
In my experience, their marketing services to attorneys are abysmal, to put it mildly. Your primary form of link building is basic directory listings. The content is outdated and thin, and lacks SEO best practices. Customer support is frequently slow based on my first hand experience with their marketing team.
An explanation of why I had this experience can be found at GlassDoor. Thereview(am 24. May 2019,of acurrent Employees, not less) says:
And here isanother goofy(this time from a former employee, in December 2017):
And here's another short oneFindlaw Reviewfrom a former employee:
Do you own your website and its content?
Technically, you own your website and content. However, I have to mention that the website is built on the proprietary CMS. You own something that only FindLaw can update. It's like owning a house but not the land it's built on.
The same was said about the content. I have encountered many situations where FindLaw kept the rights to website content. I will not go into detail about the ins and outs of a FindLaw contract, as another legal marketing colleague,Gyi Tsakalakis, did greatHere.
FindLaw's customer agreement is very vague, stating:
8.1 Property. The parties agree that between Subscriber and West (i) the
Service Interface, West Materials, West Content and any improvements thereto
created under this Agreement are the exclusive property of West, and (ii) the
The content is the exclusive property of the subscriber. During the term of this
Agreement and thereafter neither party will use, disclose or provide to anyone
third party the property of the other party, except as expressly provided in this Agreement
Agreement or as necessary for the parties to perform their obligations or
exercise or enforce their rights hereunder.
In short, this seems to indicate that while the text itself is owned by the client, the means of updating or changing that text is owned by FindLaw. Essentially, you own the front end, but FindLaw owns the back end. They own the car, but they own the keys.
To be fair, there are some website elements that are not included in the files that FindLaw provides to its clients who have broken up. FindLaw is unable to provide access to these files due to ownership or license agreements. This includes things like WordPress themes, plugin files, and licenses used for a website's features and functionality.
We asked 30 lawyers what they like best and dislike about FindLaw's legal marketing
All of this is based on both our personal experience of FindLaw (both first hand and on behalf of clients) and that of current/former employees. To provide a broader view, we conducted a survey of 30 lawyers.
Note: While this article purports to show the opinions of 30, we only show 29. We received responses from 30 attorneys, but one requested a retraction due to their pending lawsuit against FindLaw.
It's worth noting that even this summary cannot be taken as completely neutral: most of the lawyers who spoke to us have FindLaw sites. We wanted to be sure that the opinions we solicited were from attorneys who were (at any given time) active users of FindLaw legal marketing solutions. This is the only way we can be sure that we are collecting the authentic views of real FindLaw users.

The FindLaw team takes the time to understand my highly focused, specialized area of practice and then helps me connect with potential clients, experts and professionals around the world who are looking for the skills and experience I can offer have.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
I wish FindLaw would help their clients produce short videos to better represent themselves and their services to potential clients.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
Assist clients in creating and maintaining podcasts and video channels. Also, I would love if FindLaw's blog was more tailored to the specialized practice areas that their clients focus on.

What do you like best about FindLaw?
I was initially skeptical when I was offered the opportunity to use FindLaw as a marketing tool for my practice. I met with representatives of the sales team and decided to try for a year and if it didn't work I would quit... finally, no risk, no gain. After a few months, the business growth was considerable. When it came time to innovate, it was a no-brainer. There was a ~10% increase in sales in the first 7/8 months, after 2 years it's ~40% and now 3 years later my business is up over 50%. Believe what they tell you!
What do you like least about FindLaw?
I can't really think of anything that I actively "don't like". I don't mind if I get inquiries about matters that we don't handle. I'm always happy to recommend new clients to others when I'm able to. It would also be nice if their services were free, but that's not realistic, is it?
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
I think they covered the basics with SEO, website management, marketing etc etc. I have a small office and everything I need is there. I'm very satisfied.

Nothing. I had the worst ROI with this company. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone. They delivered a very nice presentation but generated absolutely nothing.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
See above. They promised to generate leads and I received almost nothing from them. Your analysis and recommendations to increase traffic did not work.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?

The website is well done and the staff at FindLaw make the transition very easy. When we started FindLaw we had a very basic and outdated website, but after switching to our new website we couldn't be happier with the way the website looks.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
We have had much more traffic to our website than we are used to and we have received a number of inquiries through our website which are not within a jurisdiction in which we operate.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
It would be great to have the ability to integrate our contact/customer information and billing associated with our website.

Great to work with them on changes and setting up links to manage live workshops. Findlaw does a lot of backend SEO, which brings in clients from all over the United States looking for escrow or escrow services near me. Findlaw is constantly exploring new ways to perfect SEO and their services.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
My contact person often changes as often as we have become accustomed to working with the designated account manager. This has happened many times and times when we were assigned an account manager and suddenly that person moved on. The account manager changed several times in a short period of time. This can be very difficult when you are trying to make a change or reach out to your contact and they don't know or stay on the site in the middle of a change.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
Maybe some kind of direct marketing; in collaboration with case management or email management so that Findlaw is linked to your marketing campaign.

What do you like best about FindLaw?
FindLaw has provided my firm with a steady stream of potential clients. They did a good job on my website too. Not only has FindLaw connected potential clients to me by making my firm easily discoverable online, but even potential clients who were referred to me found it easier to find me through FindLaw. Customer support was great too.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
It is expensive. However, I found that the cost was outweighed by the volume of business. Another unavoidable downside is that I get quite a few contacts who only contact me to market something. But again, this is not FindLaw's fault, it is simply an inevitable consequence of releasing your information to the public.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
I'm satisfied with the performance and right away I can't imagine any specific additions that would make sense.

What do you like best about FindLaw?
The connection with the community through FindLaw is fantastic. It allows both existing and new customers to contact us directly through our website. We found FindLaw's information and blog post to provide useful information for our customers looking for legal updates.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
What I dislike most about FindLaw is the format in which requests come in through our website. The email from the website to my account says "FindLaw" which is fine, but the icons and banners are also embedded in the email I receive. I usually delete these before replying to the client, so it would be nice if the FindLaw banners weren't included in the emails about the website.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
It would be interesting if FindLaw had some local networking events from time to time. It would be nice to meet some other people in the industry using the same or similar marketing approaches.

What do you like best about FindLaw?
Findlaw takes the guesswork out of marketing. There's no way I could ever keep up with all the marketing/internet changes and trends, and with Findlaw I don't have to. They take care of all of this for me and let me know when I need to make changes to improve the way I reach potential customers and strengthen my company's brand.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
Of course, it would be great if the same service and expertise were offered at a lower price. Also, I'd prefer to end the revolving door of account managers - it's difficult to keep track of who to contact for what.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
My accountant would love it if you got into bookkeeping! Help from print media can be helpful, or at least suggestions as to where something should be handed in locally (TV, radio, "newspaper").

What do you like best about FindLaw?
We have had a Findlaw site since 2008. Certainly we have had some ups and downs, disappointments and triumphs. The Findlaw sites are a tool on a powerful platform. Our second Findlaw rep was awesome and spent hours teaching me the basics of blogging and search engine optimization back in 2011. My current contact at Findlaw is responsive to my inquiries. Findlaw's backend is easy to navigate and use. I've heard that Findlaw will be moving to WordPress sites in the near future and have already built a number of their new sites on WordPress. Our Findlaw website has been a vehicle to help our company secure millions of dollars worth of leads.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
"We've had some disappointments with Findlaw over the years. In the beginning they promised far too much and delivered too little. We tried Findlaw Paid Leads for a year, which didn't do much for our spend (which was significant). Findlaw does MINIMAL SEO, just enough to get by. We also had an incident a few years ago where the developer left Findlaw in the middle of building a new website for us, forgetting all the "contact" emails that should have gone to our company instead of the defunct E e-mail address of the developer. It was corrected after I spotted the error and we were compensated. Findlaw is a big company with thousands of websites so check everything – test phone call links, email links and pay Rankings.io to do an SEO audit to make sure your site doesn't have any broken links or has technical problems. Chris Dreyer's advice has been so valuable to me over the years. I oversee the SEO of our websites, but I have told my husband, our founding and principal counsel, that if I am ever unable to continue in my role, I will pass our online presence management to Chris Dreyer.”
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
Findlaw offers top spots for lawyers and super lawyers, but I wish Findlaw offered other link building opportunities. I also wish they would keep up with the information spread in the SEO community and pass that information on to the clients. In my opinion Findlaw should ideally be more proactive in making changes to our technical SEO without telling us what we would like to have achieved.

One of our Account Managers, Parker Jones, is always on the ball. Always has great ideas and makes sure they are implemented quickly.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
Because we use multiple products offered by FindLaw, we have many different agents that we work with. As a result, it becomes confusing who to talk to, when, and to whom. Also, I find that we pay for every little thing and not much is included in the existing services.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
More included services. Less nickel and dime services. For example, we need a form on our website. We gave them the idea, the creative, everything - FindLaw just had to build it. We now pay a monthly fee to have this form on our website.

I'm not impressed with their websites. Their optimization isn't that good either. Unless you spend a lot of money on them, you're unlikely to see a big impact on new cases.

In-depth reporting on specific areas or topics. The content is sometimes a bit generic. I would like to see the topic developed further.

What do you like least about FindLaw?
Findlaw is very large and corporate. I usually seem to get automated calls and these emails for services I don't need.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
I think it would be good for findlaw to have a weekly email newsletter that sends out new articles or cases in specific areas of law. I don't have enough time to sort through and/or find all the new cases that are emerging from all the best practice articles. It would be nice if Findlaw could do this synthesis for me and send it out once a week or once a month in a nice neat email.

They were incredibly slow on site maintenance. Many of the services we commission, such as blogs, video animations, etc., are unsuitable for our core business and often legally incorrect. What do you like best about FindLaw?
Findlaw is a fine directory that allows people with little or no knowledge to find answers or references without getting tangled up in areas they don't need to be. It also provides a place where lawyers may be able to get some opportunities to connect with new clients that need their services and might not be able to find them otherwise. The size of the directory gives them the opportunity to rank as significant in competitive areas. This, in turn, gives both consumers and advocates the opportunity to network when they would otherwise not find each other.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
What I disliked the most about findlaw when using them for my website is that they were basically walking up and down the street trying to sign as many lawyers as possible who were my direct competitors. Then they gave us all similar sites and backlinks and content so there was no real way to try and dominate my competition. I didn't think it was right that there wasn't a unique way to try and make my site the best. Even if Findlaw had the best system in town, it only gets 10 spots on Google's first page, and when they have 50 customers in Detroit, there's just no way for everyone to do well, despite everyone paying the monthly fee.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
Findlaw was to offer marketing services other than internet marketing. Maybe you help lawyers with newsletters, referral networks, direct mail, social media marketing, combined TV advertising with other lawyers, etc. Because they have so many lawyers in their network and outreach, they could help lawyers band together to work together on Lead -Sharing and marketing work. They could organize events or seminars that bring their clients together and share ideas and collaboration. Sort of like mastermind groups. There are many ways they can add value to the existing services and offer services that are stand alone and separate from internet marketing.

What do you like least about FindLaw?
The service contract is too long. I believe that there should be a fair upfront website development fee (it's not that much hassle for FindLaw because their lower-level sites are template based) and a low monthly hosting fee. If an attorney wants content or other add-ons, they should be a la carte.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
It would be helpful for the attorney subscribers if a prospective client's litigation history was available.

It dominates the search as it contains most of the searches but not the same as your website appearing independently of them. Their Directories practice costs extra, but if you pay for that directory and Findlaw comes up in a search, you'll appear in their top ten list) and you can pay extra to be in the top few of their directory. The websites they develop for you appear to be custom although you really do choose from templates and the search engine optimization they provide for you is similar to what they offer their other clients who are your competition.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
You and your competitors in the exercise space are all designed and maintained by them, and it's not realistic to think that everyone can be at the top of web searches. Their directories are one of the only ways to gain search power over the rest. Findlay is huge, the sales rep can't help with design and can't help with billing issues, and his invoices are unintelligible as they list menu items according to their internal coding rather than the actual service you're paying for. You forward your claims to the sales representative and the sales representative sends you back for invoicing. They move slowly when adapting to the market and since you have contracted they do not adapt quickly to your needs nor to market changes. Individual needs are not met as they treat the industry as a group. If you have a search or market related question, their answer is to sell you more products to reach your goal or to answer your question.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
Ability to offer advice on how to balance your needs with something other than product-centric solutions. If they had a better understanding of the areas of activity and the specific market, they would be better able to match your needs with their service. Their annual review should be about more than providing stats, and it would be nice if they looked at SEO and website content as a way of improving results, rather than offering more products. At one point I had seven websites with many "add-ons" that had redundancies that could have been avoided if their reviews had been more substantive.

What do you like best about FindLaw?
They helped me grow business by being on their website. Listing in the preferred section ensures I am seen more often by potential clients searching for my areas of activity.
What do you like least about FindLaw?
The costs are quite high. And the frustrating part is partly due to their business model, which is pretty brilliant itself. Because it's a directory site with thousands of pages, it will almost always outperform a local business site for their preferred search term. So you have to pay to be seen on their website. Like Thumbtack, Home Advisor, AngiesList, etc., they put themselves between you and your customers. And ask for a lot of money for it.
What services would you like FindLaw to provide?
Despite these complaints, I am not dissatisfied with the service. The only thing I wish is that my account manager doesn't change every 4 or 6 months, I'd also like to hear about my stats a little more often instead of having to be proactive of logging into my dashboard and poking around. I am quite busy and would like this data to be sent to me automatically.

Most products are generic and Findlaw has too many customers. Having too many customers in the same region, all being optimized by the same company, is an inherent conflict of interest. Also a revolving door of representatives, so no personal relationship and personal accountability.

tl;dr: No.
The FindLaw directory still ranks incredibly well, so a sponsored directory can be a viable option in many cases. However, I would strongly recommend you to choose another provider for website design or ongoing marketing solutions that are of interest to you. Also a revolving door of representatives, so no personal relationship and personal accountability.

FindLaw Review (1-5):2
Is it worth it?
tl;dr: No.
The FindLaw directory still ranks incredibly well, so a sponsored directory can be a viable option in many cases. However, I would strongly recommend you to choose another provider for website design or ongoing marketing solutions.
